I need to make an education portal, can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm a C# and ASP.NET developer. I need to make a small, educational tracking portal, and I want to use Umbraco.
Basically, here's how it works: teachers log in and create assignments, and when the students finish the assignments, the teachers mark them as complete. The students can log in and see their progress. All the assignments are submitted personally; in other words, students don't take the tests online, they print them out and hand them in, etc.
I need someway to access a database, add/read records, stuff like that.
