    V7 Media can't move files to sub-folders

Client has pointed out you can't move an image into a Media sub-folder. i.e. if you have an image in the Media section and want to move it to Media/Galleries/Gallery1, you can ONLY move it to Media/Galleries.  Are we missing a trick here or isn't it possible?

    Thanks,

    Craig

Should have said it's version 7.0.4, just upgraded from 4.7.2 with hundreds of images in sub-folders and many in the media root that need moving into gallery folders.

    Cheers,

    Craig

In 7.1.1 I can do it.  One at a time though, ugh.

I'm currently upgrading from V7.0.4 through V7.1 to V7.1.1 so will report back. But thanks for that, it gives me hope ;)

The interim report is that upgrading to V7.1 *doesn't* fix it.  Now going to upgrade to V7.1.1 which has a breaking change aparently. Never done a breaking change upgrade !

Yes, my Media tree doesn't show the sub folders. In your example I would only see Projects and Four Freedoms in the tree.  Is this configurable?

just test by uploading an image into the media folder, then moving it into the 'test' folder as well, worked ok too.

when you did the upgrade, did you do the manual steps? I seem to recall someone else not getting full functionality from an upgrade until they went back and did some manual file replacements.

I don't know as I subbed the upgrade out to another company as I was too busy.  Don't suppose you can remember a reference to what ever the problem was could you?

    Hi Craig,

V7 has a nasty habit of cachine the living death out of the back office for speed, all very handy until something changes such as you doing an upgrade. Make sure you've cleared your cache after upgrades (you can force this by having the dev tools open assuming you are in Chrome, hit F12).

Not sure what else it might be though.

    Hi Pete,

Don't think it's caching as it's doing it straight off from the get-go when starting up VS2012 and running it locally and checking the Media section as the very first thing to do. I am using Chrome with the very handy "Clear Cache" extension which I've tried too just in case. But it seems to be more fundamental than that unfortunately.  I would guess anyone doing an upgrade could hit this as older sites potentially have more content so I would think it's in HQ's interest to sort this one out maybe?

do you have folders set as a list views? (settings -> media types -> folder -> structure tab)

Yes, they are set as list views as there are hundreds of images per directory. It's so the user doesn't have to wait till they've all downloaded before doing anything.

This then brought up the paging issue: http://our.umbraco.org/forum/umbraco-7/using-umbraco-7/50087-Media-Section-Page-Size

    Thanks

So, having removed the very useful "List View" on Media Folders, I can now move any Media item from and to anywhere. The tree shows up correctly in both the Media section (Left hand side) and the Move dialogue.

It would appear then that List View isn't just a View it's affecting other settings. Also when "List View" is enabled, it would be helpful to have a page size setting available. I appreciate this is probably a Global setting at the moment, but would be useful if it could be a setting in the Media Settings section at least.

The problem that "List View" was being used to solve in my case was a client having many Folders, each with hundreds of images. This meant wating for them all to download before being able to pick the one you want or do anything else for that matter.  Even on a local network it causes delays.  Would be good to have "List View" working as expected ;)

    Cheers,

    Craig

I wholeheartedly agree, being able to manage files in bulk is going to be essential at some point for any image intensive site. The list view helps that but a restricted user can (and shouldn't) get to the settings to change it. If just that checkbox (Enable list view) could be moved/added to the media section, at least there'd be a better answer than, 'do it one at a time' or 'call the admin'.

As it stands, for the typical person in charge of uploading file piles, the instructions are going to have to include, 'don't screw up, as it's a bitch to fix'.

    Or am I missing something...

I meant the page size setting should be easily available in the back end code (js file or something), not necessarily in the UI.

Thanks for the tip Craig, I've had exactly the same problem after an upgrade to 7.1.4 and turing off list view got things working again. Thankfully I'm not dealing with large number of files so I can live with the work around.

Ran into the same issue in a site upgraded from 6.1.6 to 7.4.3:

    Move Dialog

I could click the folders, but I couldn't expand them or search them. This was the move dialog that appears when you right click a media item in the left tree.

I did notice that I had more options if I clicked on the "Move" link that appears on the top right of the page when you select an item in the list view:

    Move Link

I was then able to expand folders and search within them. However, that search wasn't very usable (e.g., I couldn't page through items and explore subfolders... I had to know the exact name of the subfolder). Some other weird things: a weird square appeared rather than a checkmark when selecting an item, and the search results didn't have icons next to them to indicate whether or not they were folders.

Lots of silliness around list view. Hopefully they fix some of this in Umbraco 7.5. Didn't see anything on the issue list though.
