I've been having an issue with Umbraco running as a subdomain. When trying to logout nothing happens. Logout does occur when forced to be the session expiring.
The error I managed to find on the developer console was:
POST PostLogout 417 invalid token
I did find a few other posts relating to the same error code and I tried the suggestion of clearing the out the cache using the various options in Google Developer mode. I've also tried running it in firefox with no luck.

Sorry for the late reply, only just realised that notifications are off by default. The version I'm using is 7.1.1

No worries - Happens for me as well or I simply overlook an e-mail (Well, I do also get a lot) :)
I was wondering if you could perhaps trying to upgrade to 7.1.3 and see if the issue persists?
Before you do so please make sure to backup your files as well as your database.
Upgrade instructions are mentioned on the download page for 7.1.3 - http://our.umbraco.org/contribute/releases/713
