This is a Property Editor with whole thumbnail visible, the node name and a link to the media in the media section:

It's based on the Media Picker for 7.1.4, I hacked the css and html and created a custom Property Editor. Maybe someone else is interested in it.
I think you should be able to replace the built-in editor for your Media Picker properties.
Think this would be better sumbitted as a project. It will get lost fast in the forum.
