The password change that failed was using the Change Your Password dialogue in the Edit Profile.
I managed to change the password using the "Change Password" dialogue in the Content section Change Password tab. Why on earth would you put it there?!
Anyway, having changed the password, I then got a warning that I had unsaved changes (which I hadn't), so clicked out of that and proved the password change had happened. How can this stuff not have been checked? This is going to confuse the hell out of my clients. This is BASIC stuff. Seems there are some nasty UI issues in this release which is a pity because V7 is supposed to be a UI star.
I've just run into the same issue with 6.2.2; if I try to change the password in the Users section then it appears to succeed but doesn't actually change. I had to do it through Content. I've logged a bug against 6.2.2 (http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-5450) so you might want to double-check that it's the same issue and then add 7.1.6 as an affected version if so.
V7.1.6 can't change password
In V7.1.6 I can't change the admin user password. Have tried loads of times, but it always reverts to the original password:( Is this a bug?

Thanks for that, I've added a suggestion to the bug.
