I have just tried setup a fresh Umbraco 7.1.6 installation using the default starter kit on one of dev domains. After that I created a folder in the media section called images, and tried uploaded a 4 kb PNG file to the folder. I have no problems uploading the file to folder.
Maybe you could try to add the file that you are trying to upload to your media secton. Then I could try to upload the file to my installation and see if I have problems too with the file.
Yup it is possible to multiple upload, I have just tested it in Umbraco 7.1.6.
There are two ways that you could do it. If you click the upload button then you have the options just to mark multiple images from a folder that you want to upload and hit upload.
Else you can just drag and drop the images into the media section it self or a folder in the media section.
Media: It's not possible to upload PNG file.
