What's the advantage of using Umbraco over regular ASP.NET MVC?

Hey guys, I don't get what's the appeal of using Umbraco? I've taken a test drive and I don't see what it does that can't already be easily done just using a normal MVC with Entity Framework. Sure, it's a packaged solution with a dashboard and database, which could save some work, but like I said it's not that hard to achieve that and manage content with regular MVC. If I pick up Umbraco I will have to invest time learning it, but I question if that's worth my time. Can someone educate me, what problems does Umbraco solve? Thanks in advance.

Hi MorrisP and welcome to our,

The Umbraco is a content management system, that you can configure, so it suits your clients needs. It´s comes with some starter kits, but if you don´t install this, Umbraco is just a empty shell.

You need to built up the backend, so it  suits your clients needs it´s means that you need to create the fields, for each page that the user should be able to edit, and add data to.

The good with Umbraco is that you as I said that your are build up the backend, so it only contains, the fields that it needs for the type of a page. You don´t get the redundant fields or fields that not is for the page that you are editing.

Here is a link with some arguments on why to choose Umbraco http://umbraco.com/why-umbraco

If you want to learn Umbraco I can absolutely recommend you to take a look at these videos http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/, they are showing the basic concepts of Umbraco, some of them are free to watch, and some needs that you are subscribe to the Umbraco TV.

Here are also a good starter tutorial http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Using-Umbraco/Creating-Basic-Site/ and as I said in the beginning of my post there are also some starter kits which is also good to learn from.

Hope this helps, and make sense.

    /Dennis
