New to umbarco. I'm looking for a good intro to umbraco in order to get an overview and a better understanding of this CMS. I found only one book on amazon dealing with umbraco. Can somebody reccomend a good book or a great tutorial to obtain an "eagles view" over this development tool?

Having installed Umbraco I was interupted and when I came back to my PC i was not able to find the "Wellcome to the Umbraco installation" page. When I try the URL "http://localhost" I get a page with an IIS7 wellcome picture. Somebody knows what is wrong here? What I apparently miss is the possibility to configure mbraco with the "Wellcome to the Umbraco installation" page.
There is no best way of doing it. It it depends onyour references. I use the manually install myself when I setup a new installation.
Yeah you could try uninstall your first installation, and try again using one of the methods that I linked to. The easy way is the Webmatrix I think. Should be straightforward.
But try to follow one of the guides and let us know if you get any problems.
I have done a lot of programming in Delphi but have purchased Visual Studio 2013 some time ago because I want to learn C#. Allthough I think that right now it will be too much to start learning both Umbarco and C# maybee in the future I could have advantage of letting the two work together. Right now I think I will choose the Webmatrix way of installing Umbraco as it seems the most straight forward way to do the installation.
I think this forum is fantastic. Thank you guys for all your help and kindness!!
Is it possible to install Umbraco in one of the above "straight ways" on a laptop with Windows 8.1 ?
I have installed Umbraco via Webmatrix on my Windows 7 without problems. But trying to do so on my laptop with windows 8.1 was not succesfull in the meaning that the result in the tutorial did not show up in the WebMatrix installation. I know I have to be more precise if I want some help from you guys. But for instance there where not the usual Umbraco isons in the menupart and there where no links to the localhost in the page?
But since you're using webmatrix I don't see a relation there...it's indeed a bit odd. Is it 7.2 that you have installed btw? And did you install using the Webmatrix feed where you select Umbraco from the applications or did you download and unzip the Umbraco folder and then right click it and run it using Webmatrix? If it's the first option then all required dependencies should be in place as well.
1. Download and install WebMatrix 3 2. Launch the WebMatrix program
3. Choose Umbtaco CMS and install this and other neccesary prgs on the list 4. Some of the necessary programs are apparently not installed (se images 04_1 04_4) 5. When opening my created CMS it looks like image 05
I have placed som pictures from the installation process to (hopefully) give you guys an idea of what might be wrong.......

Hi,

I think the best way to get started is Umbraco.tv. This is a subscription based video tutorial site. It will get you up and running in no time.
You can also read this tutorial : http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Using-Umbraco/Creating-Basic-Site/
Dave
Hi Lars, and welcome to our.
As new to Umbraco I think that you should look at the Umbraco TV. There are some free videos about the basic concepts of Umbraco http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/content-editor/ and http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/. One of the milestones in Umbraco is the concept of Document types, here you define fields for the user in the backoffice. http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/fundamentals/document-types/what-is-a-document-type/
Some of the videos are requiring a subscription to Umbraco TV, and you can find the prices here. http://umbraco.tv/plans-signup/
Another good starting point would be http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Using-Umbraco/Creating-Basic-Site/

Thank you very much for the help!!

Does your IIS server point to the directory that you unzipped Umbraco in ?
Hi Lars,
There are several ways to install the Umbraco CMS, you could use Webmatrix or do it with NuGet or even do a manually install.
You can find the documentation for each of the installation methods here:
http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/installation/install-umbraco-with-microsoft-webmatrix
http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/installation/install-umbraco-with-nuget
http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/installation/install-umbraco-manually
Hope this helps,

- how can I check this? I dont think i unzipped Umbraco anywhere?
There are several ways to install the Umbraco CMS, you could use Webmatrix or do it with NuGet or even do a manually install.- I guess the different ways are all good - there is no "best" way to install?
I think I better uninstall my first installation and then try again?
Hi Lars,
How did you install Umbraco ? Did you download the zipfile or did use Webmatrix or visual studio ?
Dave

Hi Lars
Could you post a screendump that illustrates the issues you're seeing when installing on Windows 8.1?
I know that there has been some issues when using nuget, which should have been fixed in 7.1.1 as is shown in this thread http://our.umbraco.org/forum/umbraco-7/using-umbraco-7/49715-Umbraco-71-install-problem-%28windows-81%29
But since you're using webmatrix I don't see a relation there...it's indeed a bit odd. Is it 7.2 that you have installed btw? Hi Lars
In the second last screendump on the last line it actually says that Umbraco CMS was not installed.
So that's why you don't see anything. I'm not sure what the issue is though. Usually Webmatrix is running smooth'n'all.
Have you tried following the manual approach and see if you can succeed using that?
