I'm an ASP.NET MVC and SharePoint developer enticed into Umbraco by it's clean lightweight ways of working (anything is lightweight after SharePoint!)
I've installed (and tested with Fanoe) version 7.2 and it works nicely. But I would like to start a new site without a starter kit, but I'm struggling with the same problem every time.
I create a new Document Type called Home (with 'create a template') and 'Allow at root' from the structure. The template gets created fine. I then go to the Content tab and cannot create a node - the only choices being 'empty recycle bin' and 'reload nodes'.
I'm obviously missing something somewhere! Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
And http://umbraco.tv is always a good ressource as well. But be aware that it requires a monthly fee. But it's money well spent when starting out.
But it sounds a bit strange that you're not able to create a new node...have you right clicked the "CONTENT" node? If so...don't you see an option to create a new "Home" node?
Could you perhaps show us a screendump about the issue?
Noob: Starting Without Starter Kit
Hello Umbracians!

Thanks
Hi George
I think that you can benefit from reading this article then http://24days.in/umbraco/2014/how-to-set-up-an-umbraco-site/ :)
Also make sure to read through this documentation crafted by the community http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Using-Umbraco/Creating-Basic-Site/
And http://umbraco.tv is always a good ressource as well. But be aware that it requires a monthly fee. But it's money well spent when starting out.

Thanks Jan!
It may have been an installation problem. I've done a clean install and I now have the option to create new content!
Thanks for you help!
George
