Do you need to use Umbraco? There are other open-source solutions that are geared towards building your own social networking site - take a look at Elgg - https://elgg.org/
If it must be ASP.NET, then take a look at MonoX - http://monox.mono-software.com/ - I've never tried it, but it's worth a trial.
It is totally possible to build it with Umbraco... but be prepared for developing a LOT of custom code! :-)

Alternatively... for Umbraco, you could look at the Dialogue package...

... it is geared towards forums, but contains many of the membership features you may want to use in a simple social networking site.
