extending starter kit after installation - txt starter kit was used

We are looking at Umbraco to fill our need as we move into the CMS world for our web content.  Currently we are using Orchard and it just isn't what we had hoped.  I have installed umbraco on a dev machine and picked the txt starter kit.  I have tried to add pages and work through the role as a content creater and editor (which our sales and marketing team would eventually fulfill) and am running into some issues.  Mainly, if content is added, how does it get placed into the navigation.  Intuitively, if I add a team page under about I expect it to also show under the navigation of About.  I see no way after adding content that it shows up.  Since I am new to Umbraco I must be missing something simple.  As an end user I am guessing they would have the same confusion/frustration after they add content.

I'm hoping that the answer isn't to modify the code because again, end users arn't going to be able to do that and all they want to do is add the content and have the CMS take care of it.

    Your input is greatly appreciated.

Hi W and welcome to our :),

The TXT starter kit, does not work with a sub navigation, but this doesn´t mean that you can´t extend the starter kit to support this. In Umbraco you have some pre code snippet.

Since you are new to Umbraco I would try to provide your some links for a good starting point. First there is Umbraco TV. On Umbraco TV you will find some videos that shows the basic concepts of working with Umbraco http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/ Some of the videos are free to watch, and other requires that you sign up for Umbraco TV.

You can find the different plans of Umbraco TV here: http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/ and videos for working with content in Umbraco. http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/content-editor/.

Other good staring points would be this https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Using-Umbraco/Creating-Basic-Site/ written documentation, and there is also a article from the last year Umbraco advent calendar http://24days.in/umbraco/2014/how-to-set-up-an-umbraco-site/

Another good way to learn Umbraco, is to set-up an installation using one of the starter kits as you already did (TET starter kit), and another installation where you don´t choose any starter kits. In this installation you will build your own website, and every time your are unsure how things are done in Umbraco you could look at the installation with the Txt starter kit.

The last option I would provide to you is the Umbraco Master Class training, there are two different level of training a level 1 Master Class and level 2 Master Class, after these courses there will be an exam, and if you pass you will become an certified Umbraco developer. You can read more about these Master Classes here: http://umbraco.com/products/training

And you have already discovered this forum, and we are friendly people who try to help each other with Umbraco questions. So if you have any Umbraco related questions don't hesitate to ask them in here, and I am sure that people will love to help you.

    Hope this helps,

    /Dennis

    Hi

Thank you for the detailed info.  Maybe I should back-up and ask a more generic question.  Is it possible to use Umbraco as a CMS without coding.  We simple want to have some type of CMS system where our staff can add/remove pages and content through some dashboard and not have to worry about customization and css/html coding.  It basically just needs to work out of the box.

I'm sensing that Umbraco will require the services of a web developer and the team simple doesn't have that expertise.

    Hi W,

I think that you should see Umbraco as a framework. Umbraco is just an empty shell, where you can build the CMS so it suits your needs, so yes if you can´t code yourself, then you will need service of a web developer or a web agency. If one of the starter kits suits your needs, then I think is okay for you to use this and skin it so it is in the company colours, but this will require some knowledge of CSS to do this.

Then your editors only need to add and edit content, try to see these http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/content-editor/ video chapters about working with content in Umbraco

There is also some Umbraco certified web agencies that can help you to build up your website in Umbraco, you can find the list here: http://umbraco.com/certified-partners

    Hope this answer your questions.

    Hi Dennis,

Ok, thanks very much.  We are really looking for an out-of-box solution.  Our development team, myself included, are not able to devote resources to this for our sales and marketing team.  Finding a solution that will not require our involvment is part of the requirments.  I'll pass on the web agency list to the sales team and let them investigate further.

Thank you again for your help.

    W
