Is there a preferred news/blog plugin for v7?
I've found Smart Blog, but it looks to have inconsistent compatibility with v7 and Articulate which looks quite promising, but doesn't have many screenshots available.
Does anyone have any other recommendations?

If you need a blog for Umbraco 7 I think that the https://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits/articulate is the way to go. It can run on SQLCE database and MSSQL database.
The SmartBlog as I remember it only compatible with MSSQL server.
You could so also have a look at the uBlogsy, there is a version for Umbraco 7 too. https://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits/ublogsy/
