Umbraco DocumentTypes and GridLayouts and Fanou starterkit

    Hello all,

I am new in using Umbraco for creating websites. I saw a lot of the tutorials and I am a little bit lost in what to use in what situation. When I look at the Fanou starterkit I get a responsive website with a lot of freedom with adding the content. I see the same in the tutorial for Grid Layouts. There is no document type coupled to this editor. My question is when you use the strict document types and when you use the grid layout to give the end user the freedom to add what he/she likes (configured in the editor).

Thanks for your help in advanced.

    Regards,

    Stefan

    Hi Stefan,

I would use the Grid layout editor, as a replacement for the RTE, so you you just want to user to have the freedom to build up the entire site themself, it can be a good idea.

But one of the limitations for the grid layout is that when you request the data of the grid layout you will get the whole chuck of data, so you canĀ“t get specific fields or reuse the data in any other places, like for a news widget or a list of references.

Hope this can give you an idea when to use the grid layout and not. Since you are new to Umbraco I would recommend you to have a look at the Umbraco TV. http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/

There are some videos that shows the basic conepts of Umbraco, some of the videos are free to watch and some requires that you subscribe to the service. You can see the different plans here: http://umbraco.tv/plans-signup/

    Hope this helps,

    /Dennis
