I'm looking to replace our current standard RTE implementation for sites with the grid layout. So my scenario in this instance I just want editors to be able to have repeatable blocks of content in a single one column layout.
It would be RTE, accordions, block quotes etc but my problem is that the content editors even though I only have a single layout available are forced to select the layout which I don't feel is a very good user experience does anyone know a way of defaulting to the only available layout and row?

There is already a feature request on this in the issue tracker please see this issue http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-5721
So this feature will be available in the next Umbraco release version 7.3 of Umbraco
