    7.3.0 Content Lost

    Hi

Have had some problems with logging into Umbraco, username and password are correct, but not allowing me in.

Restarted and let me in, only to find that all the content from the last 2 days has disappeared. Not Entirely - the media folders and images still appear in Visual Studio, but not in Umbraco.

Umbraco config only has one entry, nothing from last two days.

Trace log does gives clues, but I have no idea what they mean in real terms, maybe someone could shed some light.

Was clean install of 7.3 full release via Nuget in VS2015.

The NoLastSyncedId would appear to be an issue?

    Was followed by this;

    2015-10-18 12:06:14,635 [P4864/D3/T37] INFO Umbraco.Core.UmbracoApplicationBase - Application shutdown. Details: BinDirChangeOrDirectoryRename

_shutDownMessage=Change Notification for critical directories. bin dir change or directory rename HostingEnvironment initiated shutdown Change Notification for critical directories. bin dir change or directory rename Change Notification for critical directories.

This appears to have caused many of the Umbraco related folders in the bin to be removed, deleted or excluded.

Have no idea what was happening, but clearly would like to find out as it has cost me a lot of time and will have to rebuild everything by hand.

    Many thanks in advance

    Gary.

One thing to add, I am going to upgrade IIS as it is still running on MVC 4.0 (If I can that is)

    Hi, Gary,

    That's super-disappointing!

Any chance you're running with IISexpress (either from WebMatrix or Visual Studio) and SQLCE?

    cheers, doug.

    Hi Doug

    How did you guess?

Must admit there seems a lot of confusion at the moment regarding .net versions. My machine tells me one thing and then another completely different, so have no idea what it is actually running.

I only did the WebMatrix project just to see if it would "connect". Don't feel this is an Umbraco issue, but clearly one that causes a lot of pain in trying to use it.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled almost everything, but still the issues remain. My last hope is to take the Windows 10 upgrade, which in theory will only give me .net 4.5 and then reinstall everything over the top.

Maybe there just comes a time when you have to submit to change!

Fingers crossed, but I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue, just noticed that 3rd level content is not showing for someone, this was one of the first ways I saw this, am also having the constant restarts, the project xml file is full of them. The issue of the cookie, kinda had that, but saw it a as validation key error, the last synced data was different, project treated as a fresh install.

So, do we spend time trying to fix it all, or, start afresh?

    Windows 10. Maybe?

    Regards

    Gary

    Hi, Gary,

(feeling like a doctor...) I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is that there is a straightforward solution so that you won't have any more data loss. The bad news is, the lost data is in fact lost.

    BACKGROUND
The issue is a Microsoft bug. The WebMatrix team say it is SQLCE's problem. And the SQLCE team say it is WebMatrix's problem. Lots of finger pointing over a couple years with no actual activity on the issue. It makes you want to scream sometimes.

What happens is that the data that should be written to the database (Umbraco forces a hard flush of data every second just to be on the safe side when using SQLCE) is not actually written to the database. Worst case, you should only lose a maximum of your last second's worth of work. In reality you can lose and hour's or more work.

But it only happens if you are using both WebMatrix and SQLCE. If you use any other combination you'll have no problem at all. Indeed, most people who use WM+SQLCE don't have the problem either. But if you do see the bug, you'll probably see it a lot. At least that's been my experience. No clue why a few people bump into this bug when most don't. Must be some sort of configuration issue somewhere but I've never found a pattern.

    SOLUTION
Since you're seeing the bug I'd recommend using full IIS to host the website instead of WebMatrix. No need to do anything else.

    cheers,
    doug.

    Hi Doug

Have never used WebMatrix until I had the issues, was all through VS2015 and IIS.

I did the WM thing to build the project in a different way to see if it assembled all the connections, but believe me, it was a disaster.

Like you say, the problem is in the "connections", but if it all starts correctly, no problem occurs. If I remember correctly, this happened when I first started using VS, had to install the component parts ie IIS SQL Server etc in the right order, this then ran for 3 years without any problems.

Windows 10 install is stuck at 32%, I'm not the only one who has seen that either!!

Well, had no plans to actually produce anything this week. Arrgh!

    Regards

    Gary

It's also potentially possible to have the problem with VS and it's embedded IISexpress (the same engine WebMatrix uses) but I think I've only ever heard rumors of that and not confirmed problems.

Yeah, back in the old days before WebMatrix you had so many pre-requisites to install (IIS, .NET, SQL Server Express, SQL Management Studio, make a website in IIS, make a database in SQLserver, then install Umbraco from the zip download). It took ages and ages and few people wanted to bother with all that work (or the disk bloat!). When WebMatrix and SQLCE came along it was suddenly a couple clicks and you were on your way. Quick. Easy. And simple to upscale to full IIS and/or SQL Server when you wanted to.

At least that was the plan. And it usually is for most people. When WebMatrix+SQLCE isn't happy, though... it makes everyone unhappy.

Sorry you're having such a bad time of it. Hang in there!

    cheers,
    doug.

    Hi

    8 hours later . . . . and . . . . .

    We seem to have success.

Windows 10 (like it. . . so far) and a new project, ok its running on IIS Express, but can't seem to change that, have tried but, yeah if it works like this I'm happy for now.

As I now monitor the umbraco.config, it did do the Chines bit again, so I closed and re-opened, everything rebuilt as it was so happy enough with that as I have no idea what the config file was doing until this issue.

One thing to note - before if I updated / touched the web config, all the indexes rebuilt, now they do not. It seems that we now need an instance of

    2015-10-21 22:14:53,376 [P8928/D2/T8] INFO Umbraco.Core.PluginManager - Starting resolution types of umbraco.interfaces.ICacheRefresher 2015-10-21 22:14:53,424 [P8928/D2/T8] INFO Umbraco.Core.PluginManager - Completed resolution of types of umbraco.interfaces.ICacheRefresher, found 0 (took 47ms)

    ICacheRefresher to rebuild the XML.

Will now try and start a project to see where we can arrive.

    Cheers

    Gary

For reference - Installing Windows 10 removed all old asp.net versions and introduced the new frameworks ie 4.5.2 into VS, they were not there before. So maybe there is so conflict in amongst that.

And we speak too soon . . .

If I delete a node created in the Content section - the Umbraco config turns Chinese.

At the moment, if I close VS then restart, the umbraco config is rebuilt as it should be.

Fact is I will have to keep going with this as I have lost so much time - but hopefully someone can come up with a fix.

    Regards

    Gary

    It's now every time I do anything . . . . . . .

"Invalid token TEXT at root level of the document" is the message I get if I hover over the Chinese.

So, check properties on the config file and find the encoding is set to Western European (Windows). One thing odd was initially it was utf-8, when it went to Chinese if I did a CTRL+Z it came back but the encoding was utf-16.

I changed the encoding to utf-8 and have been creating and deleting and moving and sorting and guess what . . . no more Chinese characters . . . .

Maybe there is something in this, maybe not . . . but for a couple of seconds maybe we should check the properties on configs etc . . . it could be the root of a lot of issues.

    Regards for now

    Gary
