Umbraco examine can be extended to add your own search/index providers by defining Index sets in the ExamineIndex.config. This allows you to create custom indexes. The providers are configure in the ExamineSettings.config and define how you utilize the indexes.
You have ExamineIndexProviders which define how the indexes can be used and ExamineSearchProviders which define the type of searcher and its settings.
