umbraco v 4.0.3 (Assembly version: 1.0.3625.27276)
I'm not an Umbraco developer. I've recently got a new job and in this role I edit website content. So I use Umbraco as a user... (Content, Media, Members). However, the experience is a bit clunky so I thought I'd install the Desktop Media Uploader (v2.0.1) that presents itself to me on the Media screen. Error. No joy there.
I've also noticed other simple bugs like... when attempting to sort a list of files there are some files with the same sort-order and the list shuffles but not into the sort order selected (although it doesn't present an errror... just doesn't do it).
Anyway, after looking into "what is Umraco anyway?" I came to this site. I attempted to install different versions of Desktop Media Uploader but without simple non-techy instructions I'm not sure if I did it correctly. However, I seemed to install version 2.0.5 but couldn't get it to login.... and (after uninstalling)... version 2.0.3 but again couldn't get it to login.
So... to the purpose of this post. My company is paying for a service provided by another company. They have set up and left us to edit an Umbraco site using v4.0.3 but I can see that this is an OLD version. (Its not even on the Releases page http://our.umbraco.org/download)
Is it reasonable to have expected our site to have kept somewhat up-to-date (even if its a couple of years behind current reelease)?
How easy is it to upgrade to a newer stable version? (and which version do you reocommend from v4.0.3 ?)
How easy is it to migrate this site to another service provider altogether?
Is there a more appropriate forum for these questions? And, indeed, a forum for user oriented discussions?
Thanks for your patience with these newbie user questions.
Does the service that you are paying for from the other company include support of the system they have supplied?
It really sounds like you need to get another company to provide support for your system and help you upgrade and move forward.
Regarding the migration process - it would need someone to review what you have currently got (what packages are installed if any how many docs etc) and be able to go from there.
First off, sorry to hear you are having issues with DMU. Unfortunately, the minimum version for DMU is v4.5.x, so i think this is likely the reason why you are unable to get it working (though I find it interesting you had the dashboard control installed at all).
Regarding your questions, unfortunately again, keeping a system up to date isn't usually something many companies I know of offer without there being a relevant support contract in place (as Mark said). Upgrading Umbraco versions isn't the smoothest of processes so most companies follow the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" mind set. Again as Mark says, another concideration needs to be what packages are installed as not all packages will be upgradable even if Umbraco itself is.
My suggestions then would be to either push back to the company that did the work for you in the first place, and ask if this is something they would be able to do for you. Or look for another company that can help you achieve this, there are plenty of other companies that can help. Another option, and one that can sometimes be easier (but depends on how old your site is) is to maybe take this opportunity to give the site and update and have it rewritted in an up to date version.
Ultimately though, I think you are going to need a developer to take care of this for you in one way or another, as it will require some technical knowledge along the way.
I am sad to hear your first impression of Umbraco wasn't a positive one, but I hope this goes someways to pointing you in the right direction to get you up to date and running smoothly.
Mark. Yes. There is support. I will check what the support covers to see how to move forward. As I'm quite new in the job its not something I was involved in setting up and will investigate. We're based in the Thames Valley in UK.
Matt. I watched your video and DMU looks like a useful time-saving tool. When I log into Umbraco [About > umbraco v 4.0.3 (Assembly version: 1.0.3625.27276)] and click on Media I'm presented with the DMU tab with a description and image offering Install Now for DMU v2.0.1 In eventually installed other version form the Archived Files tab at the bottom of your page at http://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/desktop-media-uploader Without understanding how to install... after a little googling I simply downloaded the zip files, unzipped and double-clicked the .air file (and later moved to trash to uninstall). (However, when unzipping 2.0.1 & 2.0.2 they simply unzipped to .zip.cpgz files and I could nto resolve them to unzip to a folder with other files.)
Thanks for both your advice. I will see where the service contract takes me and decide from there. Having seen some other Umbraco sites and the extensive community its clear there's a good reason people like it. I just haven't seen the reason myself yet. ;-)
Also, where can I find out more about v4.0.3 ? It seems there are some versions which historically have security issues. It'd be nice to know if the version we are using has any security issues. Then I can check whether they have been fixed or simply that the version is no longer supported and vulnerable.
Umbraco versions before 4.5 are not affected by the security issues from earlier last year.
As your version was released more than 3 years ago, I can understand why you're not liking it much yet. :-)
Perhaps it would be a good idea to see if you can get your site upgraded to a newer version so you can benefit from the ploish, new features and plugin support (like DMU).
Thanks Sebastiaan. Its nice to know v4.0.3 is stable and secure even if its a litlle dated. I will see what options we have for upgrading. v7 looks great on the intro video. PS. I just found the v4 Manual at http://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/editors-manual so that helps a little. I didn't know about Rollback and didn't dare experiment before reading it in the manual. We don't have the Macro button so no luck there.
