I am considering to learn Umbraco after Wordpress experience. The last years I made WP themes from scratch, added the needed php, js, custom post types and style to get a fully working theme of my own.
How hard is it to go from WP to Umbraco as a front-end developer? Does anyone had the same experience? I see it's written in C# and based on .NET, my experience with those are 0. But I learn quick and like to learn new stuff.
Are there any similarities with Wordpress? What's your experience? Love to hear from you.
HI Jess!
I've done this exact thing when I have changed agencies, .Net seems to have a much steeper learning curve than PHP and unless you worked with WordPress that has been restructured in an MVC format it might be a little difficult to understand at first. It also requires a lot more back end knowledge. However .Net is just like any language, learn by doing and it will get easier. The concept of themes in the sense that wordpress uses them goes completely out the window, as do plugins.
The environment for both local and prod are entirely different too.
However even after all of that I don't think I will be going back to WordPress for the foreseeable future.
Welcome to .Net world :), first of all, .Net is not a language it's a framework and c# is the language for building the backend of Umbraco and AngularJs is used for frontend development.
Please go through the video tutorial by Umbraco , this will give an idea about how the backend is working.
Paul from uSkinned here. You might be interested in looking at our Umbraco themes to help give you a quick start. At uSkinned, we provide the source code to our themes (Partial Views, Templates, Stylesheets, JS etc) and they can be great a tool for learning and getting to grips with Umbraco CMS.
However, if you want to just get a new site launched quickly then they are perfect for that too - they are ready to launch in minutes!
Our customers range from Umbraco novices all the way to Certified Developers and Agencies. Something that might also be of interest is our customer success stories, one customer in particular noted, "uSkinned themes are so good that I'll never use WordPress again!"https://uskinned.net/customers/
Thanks! And reach out to us if you have any questions :-)
