I must be missing something and my contour form does not send a confirmation message when the form is submitted.

I tried both the standard email work flow step and the one provided by the contrib project. The first one simply does not work and the second one throws an 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' exception in the log table.

I also tried to send the submitted data from the Entries page but no luck there either.

I know that my SMTP settings in web.config is ok, since I have some custom code in a custom control that successfully sends emails.
