Wonder if it's possible to make a textarea in my Contour form which has some formatting functionality like ie. simple editor datatype or like the one I'm writing in in this forum..?

Sure you could just add a little bit of js on the page where you have the form to add the controls to a textarea
Or you could create a complete custom fieldtype
