    MVC custom field type with custom error message

    I am looking at creating a custom field with a custom error message. I can get custom error messages for forms but I want the error to occur on the field not on the form. I want the condition to be based in code. I have tried examples like http://our.umbraco.org/forum/umbraco-pro/contour/38385-Custom-Field-Type-in-V3 but any changes to ProcessValue does not change the validation.
