    Umbraco versions support by Courier

    Hi all,

    Apologies if this has been asked/explained somwhere else but if it has I can't see it.

    A client is currently pushing hard to start working with MVC in their main Umbraco projects, especially in light of the many good things they have been hearing about Umbraco 6.

    However their deployment solutions are based around Courier and from what I have read and been told, support for any versions of Umbraco higher than 4.72 is pretty ropey at best and none existant at worst (6).

    I just wondered if there was some kind of roadmap or plan for adding in support to Courier for the later versions of Umbraco. This is not a rant or anything, would just be nice to get a clear view of which versions of Umbraco are support by Courier and perhaps a timescale on when new ones will be added.

    Also does anyone have any experience of using Courier with 4.11/4.10?

    Cheers

    Dave Hughes

    On the project page you can see the Project Compatibility for Courier: http://our.umbraco.org/projects/umbraco-pro/umbraco-courier-2

    At the package files you can see that version 2.7.3_2.7.3.39 of Courier supports the following versions of Umbraco: Version 4.11.x, Version 4.10.x, Version 4.9.x, Version 4.8.x, Version 4.7.x, Version 4.6.x, Version 4.5.x.

    Cheers Jeroen, missed that bit on the project page.

    However I was more looking for people that are currently actively using Courier with 4.11.x and 4.10.x and their experiences with it.

    Given what I'm reading on these forums I'd like to be as sure as possible before I recommend upgrading to my client.

    @David H -

    I would recommend not upgrading if you don't have to. We've had numerous catastrophic bugs that have set us back many, many hours. Things like files being rewritten to completely blank (happened on 4.11.2), missing files and DB connection issues have all popped up.

    Per (the lead dev on Courier) has chimed in from time to time on fixes, but it's really disconcerting when you pay $100+ for a product that simply doesn't work, nor provide any information to solve the issue. We've tried using Courier for probably about 6 sites so far - all ranging from v 4.7.x - 4.11.x. All of them have had issues.

    @Damon

    Which versions of umbraco and courier would you say you've had the least amount of issue or none at all?

    Which versions would you use for a new project?

    Greg -

    Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. We've had moderate success with Umbraco v4.11.1 & Courier 2.7.4_2.7.3.53 (link).

    Personally, at this point, I'm not comfortable using Courier on a new project.

    Hi Greg/Damon

    Wow finally a post where people are asking the sort of questions and making comments that i've been going about on the courier forum for months and months!

    I've battled with Courier from the outset, it's not been an easy ride! We use Courier v1.3 on our Umbraco v4.7.2 builds and i'm hoping that i'll be able to confidently upgrade these projects to 4.11.x or possibly even 6.0.x since Per released Courier 2.7.5.89.

    I've found build Courier 2.7.5.89 to be at least as stable as 2.7.4.53 in one of our more recent projects which is currently using Umbraco 4.11.4. I havent had a chance to test in Umbraco 6 yet.

    Whilst I can recommend these builds I'm not suggesting Courier 2 is by any means reliable yet! :-( it's still sadly a bit unpredictable as a product!

    So if you do choose to use Courier, it's at your own risk.

    I'm hoping to get to CodeGarden this year....and I will have a few things to say to Per when we meet!
