Language defaults to English while content in another language is published.

I have upgraded to version 8.3 and experience strange issues with language variants.
While the home page works in all 3 languages I have, the subpages, which also have their matching variants in all 3 languages, default to the English version. The url is shown as it in 2nd language (localhost/xx) but the content is from English. The System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture.Name; also returns en-US, and not xx-YY. Has anyone experienced similar issue?
Also, fallback language for all other languages is disabled.
