Tyring to ‘save and publish’ again and/or using the Refresh Status/Memory cache Reload/Database cache Rebuild buttons will have mixed results, but ultimately the best workaround we have found to fix the website is to delete the contents of App_data and restart the site.
This is on umbraco 8.5 using language variants
I don’t have any firm replication steps, it happens ‘randomly’
That sounds exactly the issue we are having. It is the memory cache that is not built correctly. Just rebuilding that appears to fix the issue. It is still really strange that the only pages that appear to be affected are ones off the root.
Do you have any nested content properties on the pages this happens on? We think that may be the cause of the issue.

update: still experiencing this issue after upgrading to umbraco 8.6
I am also experiencing this issue. It's almost like the cache keeps getting wiped. Currently seeing this while running a site hosed in Azure.
