We built a site using language variants and now have 8 variants. We are however running into problems which are confusing errors. If we can't resolve them I wonder how hard it is to duplicate each variant and make them each standalone sites?

Problems:

1. Each variant is quite different so we have lots of unpublished pages on other variants which is confusing editors
   1. We can't sort variants independently so node order has to be the same or you have to create a new node
   2. Publishing pages is confusing - generally we only want to publish 1 variant but quite often ALL the others are checked to publish so either you publish them all accidentally or you need to go through unchecking boxes.
