Do I really have to choose between an API and a frontend?

I was looking to start using Umbraco to lift out some structured data that's currently in confluence documents, I then wanted to display them in 2 places, Confluence via a REST call and on the Umbraco frontend after I've created a template for them.

I've come to use Umbraco 8 and the API I saw in this talk https://youtu.be/wLGK4eaqf1M?t=837 and it seems it's deprecated (https://our.umbraco.com/documentation/Implementation/Rest-Api/)?

I find it hard to believe I'd be asked to choose between a frontend and an API, the draw of using Umbraco for this was that I could have both !

Reading around it appears this is indeed the case, comments in that youtube video confirm it. I'm also not interested in spending energy using a legacy version of the app.

Who removes an entire API, splits into 2 projects where even the paid one doesn't have all the features !?! I'd happily pay if I got more features not less.

Can't express how disappointed it feels to learn about this awesome tool only to then discover it's own devs have screwed it over :(

Has there been any change to the status of this? Months on and I have another opportunity to make use of a CMS that supports both frontends and headless

Seems like Umbraco is becoming less and less supported and thus less and less an option.
