When I reorder the groups on my DocType, click I'm done reordering. Click save. Leave the DocType and come back, the order of the groups is not preserved.
This isn't a new issue. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
On the re-order page, to the right you find the order index fields. Add indexes manually and see whether this works for you. Lower index values are sorted further up (earlier), greater index values further down (later).
I run into this issue with inherited groups. I would reorder, but the new order would not persist. With manually setting the order index, it worked for me.
Note that for inherited groups, you need to set the inherited group's order index in the doc type edit screen of that inherited doc type itself. You cannot edit the order index of inherited groups in the parent doc-type, the fields are locked.
I've tried that. I'll get them all ordered like i want. Everything looks good. Click "I am done reordering". Save the DocType. Leave that page. Come back to that DocType and the order I set is not preserved.

Strange. It works for me on Umbraco 8.6. Sorry, I am running out of wisdom.
