We're using Umbraco 7. We'd like to upgrade to the latest version (8.9 I believe). What's involved? Is it guaranteed to work seamlessly? Will we lose any data in our database? Will any data be corrupted?
It's probably also a good idea to investigate what 3rd party packages you're potentially using and research whether these work with or exist for Umbraco 8.9 as well + Any custom developed property editors too.
Before doing anything it's always a good idea to create backup of all the files and the database too in case something goes horribly wrong in the process.

There is no direct upgrade path from Umbraco 7 to Umbraco 8. You need to migrate instead - You can find some more information about this in the docs here https://our.umbraco.com/documentation/getting-started/setup/upgrading/version-specific#version-7-to-version-8
