Upload fails "error has occured..." and log shows HTTP 500 error on POST to ...media/PostAddFile

I have a site that just moved to production last weekend. Everything works fine on my DEV site but in PROD I see the following errors everytime I try to upload something into media.
I have checked file permissions and even opened them admin for a bit with no success. It is not a file size limitation as I have adjusted that upward and my .pdf file is only 1/2MB in size. The problem occurs on multiple client machines so I don't think it is local cache.
Ideas? Is it maybe something with HTTP to HTTPS? That's the only thing different from PROD to DEV because I copied PROD to DEV just last weekend. I haven't changed anything substantial and yet I can't upload! Found it when I started training in PROD.
