We've implemented Discourse for some of our clients. It seems to be the standard for discussion forums nowadays. It runs in a docker container and can easily be deployed to any server / cloud service from there.
We don't like to get ourselves bogged down by a lot of I.T. and devops so we make use of Azure or AWS for hosting a lot of our stuff. Set it up and forget it.
If all of this works for you, your next question will be about single sign on. We haven't been asked to connect Discourse with the Umbraco member sign-in process. I wonder if an Umbraco SSO package exists or how many people would be interested in helping build such a package.
Again – sorry for the non-answer. Just wanted to share a robust forums solution that we have taken a liking to.
Community forum for Umbraco 8
Are there any existing and fairly advanced discussion forums available for Umbraco 8?
Sorry Tony, going to provide a non-answer here.

Their instructions for installing the docker container image on the cloud are generic but accurate!

Hi Tony,
I haven't tried it, but this is my best bet: https://github.com/huwred/Forum-for-Umbraco
I don't know which advanced features you need, but if you're a dev it could serve as a starting ground?
