We are coming from Wordpress with our development team to Umbraco.
Now we get our first update popups in Umbraco. It looks pretty simple as a non-technical person to just download and install the update.
But the development team needs about 40 hours for updating Umbraco to latest version. Is this normal for a Umbraco update? We use Uskinned theme as a builder.
In this example we would like to go from Version: 8.16.0 to v9.3.1.
Usually minor upgrades (8.16 to 8.17 for example) aren't very time intensive.
If you upgrade major versions (for example 8.x to 9.x) there can be several breaking changes. Especially in this situation as the underlaying code uses a entirely new framework.
(More on upgrades here: https://our.umbraco.com/documentation/fundamentals/Setup/Upgrading/version-specific)
It all depends on the amount of custom work, if it's a plain Umbraco with only a plugin, less time is needed. If there's a lot of custom controllers/services, it can get quite high on time requirements as a lot of refactoring needs to be done.
Good to know, the EOL for Umbraco 8 is February 2025. You could always consider first updating to 8.18, and upgrade to 9 (or 10 even) in the future.
How long does updating Umbraco usually take?
