I think it is working as intended. If you haven't ever published the Spanish variant before, the node name in the tree is only a "placeholder" which you have to fill in before you actually publish the node. Same behavior on v8, v9, v10.
I don't think Umbraco ever auto-translated node names for new cultures out of the box (although it's probable there's some plugin that does that).

I have a multi language project setup and whenever I switch to another culture, the node names are being cleared and not translated.
I seem to recall umbraco translating node names before or am I misremembering?
