We have some properties that are hidden for all user groups, except admins and 1 specified user group. This is done by hooking into the EditorModelEvent.
The hiding of the properties works fine, but whenever a user that does not belong to the specified user group and is not an admin (and therefore can not see the properties) tries to Save or Save and publish a content node that includes one of the hidden properties, an error occurs and the node can not be saved (and published).
The occuring error: Unexpected character encountered while parsing value: U. Path '', line 0, position 0. *
Edit after more testing:
The error occurs only if the hidden property is a blocklist editor.
The error occurs only if the hidden property has a value.
What is going wrong? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have implemented your suggestion and the method gets hit on saving nodes where the error doesn't occur. But it does not get hit when saving the nodes that raise the error. It seems the method that is causing the error (which seems to be Umbraco.Web.PropertyEditors.BlockEditorPropertyEditor.BlockEditorValues.DeserializeAndClean) is hit before the ContentService.Saving.
Any thoughts?
Edit: I've looked a bit further into Umbraco's code and noticed that in method PostSaveInternal the method ContentService.Save gets called áfter MapValuesForPersistence and MapValuesForPersistence is the one where the error occurs. So ContentService.Saving unfortunatelly doesn't solve the issue.
Because the property is hidden, it is also absent in the post value when hitting the Save-button. Because saving works fine when the hidden property has no previously set value, maybe there are some 'leftover' array/object characters that are not excluded the right way when hiding the property, which is causing the json formatting to mismatch?
I'm thinking this might be a bug in Umbraco, but I'm not sure.
