Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data. Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

    Hi,

Our company website www.ifis.org will not load, nor will the Umbraco system when I try to log in (all other websites are fine). On Chrome, I am getting the following error message:

Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data.

    Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

I can't log into Umbraco to check, but I believe we are running Version 4, which is rather out of date. I've joined the company recently and am working on rectifying this.

I have checked using Command Prompt and the server is returning the correct IP address, so this isn't the issue.

We don't have an in-house e-marketing team, and unfortunately I really don't have the technical knowledge to understand where the problem lies.

I would hugely appreciate some advice.

Thank you very much in advance,

    Rhianna

Hi Rhianna and welcome to our :)

So just to be clear - The version of Umbraco you're running is 4? Because the post is placed in "Umbraco as a service", which is Umbraco hosted in the cloud and based on v7 - Not that it's a big deal though just want to make sure what exact version we're talking about. We'll help you anyway :)

You can see the exact version by going to the web.config file and search for the "umbracoConfigStatus" key - If you're able to access the backoffice you can also see this information in the "Help" section. But it sounds like you can't access it at all.

Do you know if any new deploys have been made to the site? Or has it just been running for some time without any issues and then this just started to happen? It might be a good idea to check if both the database and database servers are running out of disk space.

Also it might be a good idea checking if the database server might be down for some reason.

Hope some of these pointers help.

    /Jan

    Hi Jan,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Sorry for any confusion, I didn't realise I had posted in the wrong place. No, the version we're running isn't on v7.

Unfortunately, I can't access the backoffice at all, and I've never seen anything to do with the web.config file. The development side of our website has always been managed by a third party company who would normally deal with issues like this, but unfortunately, they have very recently gone into liquidation so there's no one I can ask. I've been trawling through documents left by my predecessor to see if the version we're running is mentioned but there's no sign of it. All I know is that the version of Umbraco has not been upgraded since the site was set up, which was in December 2011, and I have vague memories of being told it was v4 in a conversation with the third party company.

No new deploys have been made to the site. It was running absolutely fine yesterday, but when I came in today, it wouldn't load. I've tried it on multiple browsers and devices, and the page won't load on any of them.

Please could you advise how I can check if the database server is down or if it's running out of disk space? As I say, it's always been managed externally so I'm unfortunately completely clueless on this.

    Thanks so much,

    Rhianna

    Hi Rhianna

Ok, if it's from 2011 it's probably running Umbraco 4.5.x - But if the site was fine yesterday then I suspect it might be the space issues I mentioned.

You need to get in touch with someone who knows how to acces the webserver - Perhaps just get in touch with the hosting company if you don't host internally. If you host internally then someone from your IT department must know about the site.

Hope this helps even though it's not much.

    /Jan
