Umbraco and SEO: help me to sustain a cause that Umbraco is SEO friendly!
Hi,
I've a big website ( http://www.econewsweb.it/ ) made with Umbraco 6.2.4 and UBlogsy with some customization. A competitor says that the low index performance or appeal is caused by the tech platform ( Umbraco ) and that Wordpress is better. I made an analisys but I think that the big issue is the format and the little interest of the users.
Have you some tips and consideration or example of big sites to help my theory?
It's cheap to claim that Umbraco is not SEO friendly - Since Umbraco does not restrict the possibilities for optimizing a site by having default fields, which MUST be used for certain things an Umbraco based website can be as SEO optimized as any other platform in my humble opinion. Umbraco can't handle the content optimization for your client and neither can Wordpress out of the box but there are several helpful plugins already made for Wordpress, which helps the editor in regards of improving SEO.
From a technical perspective Umbraco or any other .NET based application for that matter can be setup to handle all the technical aspects of SEO.
So maybe the low index can be caused by the content not being very well written or optimized for the keywords that your client wants to be competitive on - Or maybe the competition on those keywords are simply to tough to achieve organically and they need to rethink their strategy and maybe target other relevant long tail searches where the competition is not as tough.
It's a bit too one-sided to just blame the platform since there are many things that should be taken into consideration when it comes to SEO in my humble opinion. I'm no expert but I would say that a overall SEO/SEM strategy should probably be in place and that the actual content should be checked to see if it could be written in another and better way complying with the Google webmaster guidelines etc. - And of course it could be that some of the technical stuff should be tweaked or fixed like using extensionless url's, make sure that 301 redirects are automated and that there is a hierachy of H-tags that makes sense etc.
EDIT: Just forgot to mention that the link profile for the website is also a very important ranking factor - If the competitors that are doing better have more ingoing links of high quality than your client this is an area, which they should focus on improving. (NOT by buying links but by earning them due to good and relevant contnet).
thank of your opinions and I agree with you and I already said some similar words on and I'm writing an analisys on that. Yes, the site is a bit arid and "static".

Just my 2 cents.
