How to auto create video poster

I'm using the Insert Media feature of the RTE to insert video clips. Is there a way to automatically create or specify the video frame to use as the poster? By default it looks like the first video frame is used, which in most cases is black.

    Hi Connie,

Are you using a video file from the media library or are you embedding for example youtube video's ?

I may put the items in Media, but for now they are just copied to a folder under Media. They are MP4s that we pulled down from YouTube.

Why not leave them on Youtube then ? On youtube you can select a cover image if i'm correct. In umbraco you can add them to a RTE using the Embed functionality.

If you need the embed functionality outside the RTE you can use this awesome package ;-)

We have a staff of 100+ who will be watching these videos to learn some new software. The use across the Internet will kill our bandwidth so we want to host them internally.

The more I thought about it, trying to automate capturing a single frame from the videos is probably a bad idea since you have no idea what you are going to get. You could get an odd looking image if the frame is a transition or does not represent the topic.

I think I need to open each video in an editor of some sort, scan through and find a good spot to grab a still and then capture. Just been awhile since I've done any video editing so not sure of an easy tool that allows this.

After trying several tools, I finally found one that worked. VLC Media Player allows you to pause at just the right spot and capture the screen to an image file. I then just resized to my preferred thumbnail dimensions and used that as the poster. Not the automatic method I was looking for but this gave me better control over the results.
