    Hello!

I used develop a lot on Umbraco over a year ago, I think this was when 7 had come out and then a few version after that. I opened up Umbraco over the week-end and saw a few nice things! Like composites, form building, grids and child display things.

Looks very interesting! Can someone just do a quick run down of what those are and give a few pointers on how to use them ? I want to play around with them more during the week.

    Anything on multilingual websites yet?

    Thanks!

    Hi Sebastien,

Do you know Vorto for multilingual web sites? You don't need to create few trees with Vorto !

Another great feature out of the box - strongly typed models, read more - https://github.com/zpqrtbnk/Zbu.ModelsBuilder/wiki/Zbu.ModelsBuilder

Also try to use Archetype - unbelievable package : https://github.com/kgiszewski/ArchetypeManual

    Cheers, Alex

Hi Sébastien and welcome back to Umbraco-land :)

It might be worth having at look at some of the articles written in last years 24 days advent calendar here http://24days.in/umbraco/2015/

Also a new monthly online magazine has been born - It might be worth having a look at some of those articles too. Some of tech and some are a bit more about work-life-balance etc. http://skrift.io/

It might also be a good idea to have a look at the release notes for 7.4.x to 7.4.2 to get an idea about was has been added in this minor release https://our.umbraco.org/contribute/releases/740/

On the progress page you can see what is coming in the upcoming releases https://our.umbraco.org/contribute/progress

Apart from that with the release of 7.4 the document type editor has gotten a major overhaul, which you might have noticed so now you can setup your document types without having to swith between the "Developer" section and the "Settings" section in order to build your document types, which is really nice and gives a much better flow.

Compositions as you mentioned have been added and with the release of 7.4 it's also possible to organize them in folders, which is also really nice.

In the "Developer" section it's also possible to organize datatypes in folders as well.

The grid has also matured a bit with the release of 7.4 - I have not been using it that much myself though but I can tell that the UI for it has had a facelift and has become easier to use for editors I would say. Less confusing UI now.

The media section has been given an overhaul as well even though it's a bit more subtle and harder to notice maybe. But you can now configure the list-views (and the default list view thing is also new btw) so images can be listed the way you would like to see them appear. Also the upload is working really nice with the option of drag'n'drop of multiple files - However uploading folders is not possible out of the box though. EDIT: Strike that last part about folders not being possible to upload. IT IS possible to upload an entire folder by choosing it or dragging/dropping it. Zip uploads that extract and upload images into the media section however is not possible :)

Another cool thing that has been added is the "Change document type option", which won the Pull Request of the year award at #CG14 - Andy Butland made this nice feature. So in the content section it's possible to switch a document type to another document type in the context menu. So if a document was created using the wrong type for some reason it's possible to map the values to the correct document type and change the document type. Wow! That's really awesome!

Many things have happened but I'm starting to have trouble remembering when what was added to be honest. So I might have missed some nice detils.

Apart from the packages Alex mentioned above I think you should also have a look at nested content, which you find here https://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/nested-content/

    Hope this helps.

    /Jan

    Hello again

Just remembered one more thing that has been improved and that's the "preview" mode, which has a nice "See what the page looks like on these devices" option - So the editor can see what the page will look like on a phone, tablet etc. - However all it's doing is trickering some viewport widths so if the site is not made responsive then it will of course not work. But from an editor experience viewpoint I think it's nice since they get a feeling that the can see what it will look like without the need to check on their devices manually - It can of course be a bit off for several reasons but in most circumstances it should be really nice :)

    Hey Jan!

Thanks for the write-up! Sounds like a few nice features! I'll try and play with a few, the media upload sounds like fun!

I'm taking a free template and just wiring it up through Umbraco for kicks. I wonder if someone would buy a pre fab website haha :D

    Thanks!

Just a comment on Jan's reply

Zip uploads that extract and upload images into the media section however is not possible

For that you can use this package https://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/zippy-media-import/ which extract the files.

"Not possible to do zip uploads out of the box it should have read". Sommetimes my head is faster than my fingers :-)

    Enjoy the exploration Sébastien!
