    Multi lingual sites, best practice

What is best practice when adding a new language to an existing page? Now is located Norwegian subpages here: http://listerfriluft.no

But if I have to add a language, it seams common to put the two languages like this in each subdirectories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INY1th1KhEU

    http://listerfriluft.no/no < (norwegian) and http://listerfriluft.no/en < (english)

Note that the content already exist, and it's from Norwegian nature, and is intended also for foreign visitors in Norway.

But than all original URLs will be changed, and I don't know that is what I wish. Updating can ofcourse be transmitted to Google, but other affiliates will end up with broken links to sub-pages, so I think it will be better like this: http://listerfriluft.no/ < (norwegian) and http://listerfriluft.no/en < (english)

And it's maybe most natural that the language selection is done automatically so when browsing from Norway you meet Norwegian side, and English otherwise? (How..?)

In addition, the website probably should have a visual url picker between Norwegian and English language selection.

How are the procedure here, and there otherwise other criteria that should be considered?

    Hi Tom,

    Great question.

    1) And it's maybe most natural that the language selection is done automatically so when browsing from Norway you meet Norwegian side, and English otherwise? (How..?)

Usually we define what language to show by IP. It's nor very hard logic, you define from which country is the customer and redirect him to needed language node.

Do you have root node for Norwegian language? Or all your pages located in the root of content section ?

    Cheers, Alex

I'm not quite sure what you mean, and how/where can these two language versions be automatic redirected?

Today my website start at http://listerfriluft.no, and structure is like this: enter image description here

And if I shall folow the example in the youtube link above, then the norwegian content must be copied, and maybe look like this? enter image description here

But then the example propose that these websites URLs will be like this:

http://listerfriluft.no/no for the norwegian language, and http://listerfriluft.no/en for the english language.

The original URLs from the norwegian text will be changed in the example.

    Hi Tom,

You can map domains like that:

    http://listerfriluft.no - norwegian language

    http://listerfriluft.no/en - english language

    Without /no for norwegian.

And you shouldn't afraid about Google punishes for changing URLs.

If there some problems, another approach is to use 301 tracker, package for monitoring and adding permanent redirects for site.

    Cheers,

    Alex

Do you have any details on how this can be done?

In this example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iDjTObD_9U , Casper show a solution equal to (where umbracoHideTopLevelNodeFromPath was changed from true to false in web.config):

    http://listerfriluft.no/no - norwegian language

    http://listerfriluft.no/en - english language

when I want a solution like

    http://listerfriluft.no - norwegian language

    http://listerfriluft.no/en - english language

Note: When the umbracoHideTopLevelNodeFromPath was changed from true to false in web.config, then my search page stopped working.

I'm not worried about Google, but it's doubtful others who have linked to subpages from listerfriluft.no website today update their links.

In the youtube link above, he specified the two home-pages with names, but I can probably not set a blank name? Have you any more detail how this can be done in Umbraco?

And do you have any details regarding this auto dedication of which country IP come from?

Umbraco can work with urls without first root node. So fo first root node(Norwegian) you will use domain without /no.

For English you will map domain with /en, and all paged under English root node will have /en in URL.

Does it make sense for you?

Tom, a lot of examples with IP detection there - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4327629/get-user-location-by-ip-address

    Thanks,

    Alex

Back again. First of all, I'll just try to find out how long it takes to set up a new language solution (without the content). What I think is important, is that SEO must remain as recommended when double URL is being created (also use canonical today).

What I'm wondering first of all: How, and where do you map these two language versions for http://listerfriluft.no (norwegian laguage) and http://listerfriluft.no/en (english language), if I want to keep http://listerfriluft.no as it is today (so that I'm maybe not have to modify search and XML maps etc.)...
