Spike in both CPU and RAM causing site to crash

The umbraco installation is quite large with 4 websites running on it and a shared news section, it was built in Umbraco 7.2.4 using Hybrids package. Everything was working fine but the site was throwing silent errors for a SEO package and Umbraco scheduled publishing. At this time the CPU jumped around 40%-60% and the RAM normally sat around 1Gb slowly climbing to 2Gb and finally crashing.

Now I fixed the SEO package by removing it as we didn't really need it but the Scheduled Publishing wasn't something I was able to track down. so I decided to Update the Umbraco version to the latest 7.4, however for some reason this caused the site to be extremely slow, around 16 second page load for basic content pages, while before it used to be around 0.5-1.5 seconds. Now of course MVC 5 was released as well so I'm not sure if that caused a problem but I decided to pull it back and only upgrade it to 7.2.8.

Now this pulled the RAM down to a reasonable 350-450MB compared to before, however, the CPU still spikes randomly and every once in a while (can be early hours in the morning) the site will spike in both CPU to >90% and RAM >2Gb. When I updated the Site to version 7.2.8 the website logs stopped working as well (no idea why) so I can't even see if it is still related to the scheduled publishing problem.

Any help on ways I can track the problem or any possible solutions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Maxi

This is a bit of a long shot from me - But I'm wondering wehther your server might be suffering from this issue? http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-6338

From the issue: * If you have Windows Server 2012 R2 + IIS and either KB3000850 or KB3007507 installed, YOU ARE AFFECTED

This might be worth checking out and see if an upgrade of the server software will fix the issue for you.

    Hope this helps.

    /Jan

    Hi Skovgaard,

Thank you for the reply and sorry for not getting back sooner (moving offices and things never go as expected). That is the issue I kept coming back to but I couldn't find any of those patches installed on the server.

It's really hard to pinpoint as it happens at random times of the day and I can't seem to find what calls could be getting made or if there is anything else I should be looking for.

Do you know of any other way to see whats going on with umbraco? Also would you know why my logs would randomly stop working after the update?

    Thanks

    Maxi
