I'm new here and hope to learn as much as i can from you fine people.
Gonna start off to say that i have no knowledge of designing a website and i am a hopeless cause at this point. Long story short is i have to manage a website that has been neglected for a long time and it runs on version 4.
I would love to rather study and learn all the aspects needed to tackle this issue but i simply don't have the time and hope some very patient and clever people can help me.
The website is being hosted by someone else and i have the login details to get in the site and change the information. I figured out that part but i want to add a very basic forum feature to the site. I have seen things like Nforum and such however i have no idea how i actually upload it to the site and make it a working feature. Sorry if i frustrated anyone. I will link a screen shot to what i see and hopefully someone can assist me. Screen shot
Well the first thing you need to establish is which version of Umbraco 4 you are running.
If you can login to your backoffice, with the provided login details, and see in the top right hand corner an 'About' button, this will tell you the exact 'build' of Umbraco your site is running on, eg v 4.7.1
This is important because the nForum package has three different versions that are still available
1.7 - works with Umbraco 6.1+ only
1.6 works with Umbraco 4.8+
and
1.5 works with Umbraco 4.7
There is a video on the nForum page (https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/nforum/) that takes you through the steps of installing nForum into an existing Umbraco website:
Essentially packages are installed into Umbraco via the developers section, there is a 'packages' area, and once you have downloaded the correct version of nForum for your Umbraco site, you can choose to 'Install Local Package' to bring the new functionality into your site.
One thing to consider is your site is quite old now in terms of Umbraco vintage, and possibly upgrading to the latest version would open up newer Forum packages, such as Dialogue (https://our.umbraco.org/projects/collaboration/dialogue/) and Simpily Forums (https://our.umbraco.org/projects/collaboration/simpily-forums/)
Clueless newbie needing help

Hi Arthur
Welcome to Our Umbraco.
Well the first thing you need to establish is which version of Umbraco 4 you are running.
If you can login to your backoffice, with the provided login details, and see in the top right hand corner an 'About' button, this will tell you the exact 'build' of Umbraco your site is running on, eg v 4.7.1

Essentially packages are installed into Umbraco via the developers section, there is a 'packages' area, and once you have downloaded the correct version of nForum for your Umbraco site, you can choose to 'Install Local Package' to bring the new functionality into your site.
There is an nForum specific forum for questions here: https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/nforum/general/

Thank you very much Marc for the advice and info.
With the site being hosted by someone else can i upgrade Umbraco to a newer version or would i have to ask the host to do it?
If i am to do it is there any tutorial or guide for me to follow to upgrade Umbraco without me botching it up :)
Thanks again for the help! Really appreciate it
Hi Arthur
Have a look at the upgrade guide here.
https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/getting-started/setup/upgrading/general
You would want to be able to access the files on the server and the database really.
Mainly so you can copy them an attempt a test upgrade without affecting the live site.
