You need to double check if this is changed for this particular data type which is assigned to desired document type. You need to be aware that Umbraco from some point is creating new data type variants when you're not re-using base property, so it may be the case here. It shouldn't case any problems to modify those settings if we're doing it in the right place. What version of Umbraco are you using btw.?
