dowloadable themes / skins / starter kits

Hi - does anyone know of a good v7 theme /skin / starter kit resource where I can purchase or download a theme.

I need to deliver a site in 4 weeks and have very little experience on v7.

Thinking that if I can purchase a good theme then should be able to deliver on time.

    Many thanks

    Hi sd75,

    Welcome to our community!

I would say that there are no perfect place for purchasisng skins for Umbraco.

    But you can look at:

    1) https://uskinned.net/

    2) http://bindtuning.com/cms/umbraco/themes

    3) https://our.umbraco.org/projects/?category=Starter%20Kits - starter kits it's not skins, it's like ready for use site-template

I hope it will help you. Have a nice evening!

    Thanks,

    Alex

Decided on uskinned - chose the source with bootstrap theme. Very impressed. Very easy to get a site up and running in no time.

PLEASE PLEASE, do not use uskinned.net skins. As their licence model is a absolute nightmare, my site as do other customers of theirs continually becomes unavailable with error "LICENSE NOT FOUND OR INVALID" which makes the site look dodgy/illegal.

Incredibly the Uskinned licence model is that if a illegal URL or a malicious request is made to the site, then the whole site becomes unavailable with the error "LICENSE NOT FOUND OR INVALID". The server needs to be restarted to fix the error message. Usknned does not see a problem with this, and states other Umbraco companies use the same licencing model. Instead if taking the whole site permanently down, it is acceptable for non licensed URL's to return a "LICENCE NOT FOUND" error. Incredibly Uskinned do not see a problem with this, and then want to sell at 5X - 10X original cost a unlimited URL package.

I have spend days working fruitlessly with Uskinned support, fine tuning the web.config trying to trap the different URL's and requests to no avail.

To see how many uskinned customers, which have been affected by Uskinned licence model perform a Google search on:- uskinned "LICENSE NOT FOUND OR INVALID"

If you value your sanity, KEEP CLEAR.

    Hi Richard,

I am sorry to hear you are so upset with this however we have 1000s of customers who have been able to adhere to our licensing model and set it up with no issues.

A website will become invalid if it is hit via a domain or IP address that is not listed in the license. A website should only ever be served via a single domain for best practice SEO setup so if you have more than one domain we have a simple guide which explains how to setup redirects correctly:

    https://uskinned.net/blog/posts/2017/june/quick-tip-assign-multiple-hostnames-to-the-one-production-domain-correctly/

We use the exact same licensing model as many other Umbraco package providers and are not using any techniques that are not familiar in the Umbraco ecosystem.

Our customers come from all walks of life and have very large and complex websites running with our licensing model with no issues. Some examples:

    https://www.ministryofsound.com/

    https://www.webcruiter.com/

    https://theministry.com/

    https://pim-pam.co.uk/

    https://www.visitsalford.info/

We are not in control of your own server setup so if you do not follow our guidelines correctly you will see the license message.

If you are willing to give our support team access to your server then we will make sure the configuration is correct.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

    Hi Richard,

Also to add to this. It is clear that you haven't implemented your redirects even although we have given you instructions on how to do this. You should decide what you want your main domain to be. Probably:

    https://www.procheckup.com

Since this is the domain that appears in a google search for Procheckup.

You should then have a redirect in place for all other domains which go to your main domain.

https://procheckup.com does not redirect to your main domain.

Since you dont have the redirect setup for this I would assume that there are other domains that can be used that also do not redirect to the main domain and therefore cause the license issue.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

    Hi Richard,

In reply to your comment about "other customers with the licensed not found issue" when you search this in google there are actually not that many and it is clear that these are test sites which are not finished as they still have the demonstration content in place.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

    Hi Marc,

I have spent 3-4 days with Uskinned technical support adding in all of the blocked sites to my web.config file, Uskinned technical support is exhausted.

It is crazy that customers have to do this all this work, to prevent their site being taken down by Uskinned's licencing model.

Please list Uskinned competitors which use the same licence model, and I will avoid them like the plague. I am not sure if Uskinned realises how painful it is to restart your website every few days, as someone sent a request with looks like a unlicensed URL which then downs the website.

    Hi Richard,

You have not created your redirects correctly.

https://procheckup.com does not redirect to https://www.procheckup.com

Since this is the case I am assuming you have other domains that are pointing to the site which do not redirect correctly.

    Please contact support via:

    https://uskinned.net/contact/

We will reply to you straight away. If you can then send your web.config file for the live site we will update this with the correct redirect rules.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

    Hi Marc,

We had other domains pointing to the webserver, which are now blocked from connecting directly and instead redirect to the site. As stated we have spent days with Uskinned technical support, we have sent the web.config to Uskinned technical support. And never found a solution to malicious requests activating the Uskinned licence failure/feature, which then took down the website until it was restarted.

As before this is a crazy way to licence a product, and normally I would expect a licence error to be thrown to a malicious individual requests - instead the whole site is taken down and requires a restart.

Answer my question, and list the other companies which use the same licencing model so they can be avoided?

    Hi Richard,

Only domains that you have defined in your IIS website bindings can be used to access a website. These are the only domains that you need to include in your redirect rules. If you send your web.config file to support along with a screengrab of your site bindings listing all domains that you use we will be able to rectify this issue immediately.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

As a uSkinned fac, I have to agree with Marc. I've used uSkinned on many of my client's sites. I love the innovative designs for both the front-end and the CMS back-office, as well as the excellent level of support. There's a lot of great originality in uSkinned's work, and the migration from Umbraco 7 to 8 has been extensive.

Licensing models are confusing and in my opinion, uSkinned are extremely reasonable both in terms of licencing and pricing.

If you want a quick turnaround, I strongly recommend these guys. Worked with their templates since 2015 and never had anything but a pleasant experience with them. I'm not paid to say any of this - it's just how I feel. I don't like seeing someone say something bad about a resource that has been invaluable to so many. Thanks
