Hey, no worries! Wouldn't want you going down the wrong path.
I'd suggest using a Textarea (might also be called a "textbox multiple" or "text string multiple" depending on the Umbraco version).
You can add whatever text or HTML you want to this as it's basically a multi line text field. Some developers use it for adding in tracking codes or user managed scripts.
Set Rich Text Editor to HTMl mode by default
Is there anyway to set the rich text editor to HTMl mode first, rather than clicking the source icon every time I want to apply HTML?

I'm afraid not, the rich text editor is powered by TinyMCE but there isn't a setting which would start in HTML mode.
