Google Enterprise Search going away, alternatives?

    Hello Umbracians,

Got an email a few days ago that Google Enterprise Search will be going away, defaulting back to the ad-supported version of Google Custom Search.

We use this for our website and was wondering if anyone knows of an alternative for full-text search on a Umbraco website? Or if someone has implemented a full-text search, similar to Google, using Examine?

Thank you for your help! Genc

    Hi Genc

    We use this package: https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/full-text-search/

It indexes the html content of all your pages to Examine, and lets you search it.

Thank you Soren! I see this is not yet fully tested with 7.5.x and not yet tested on the Umbraco Cloud :(

    Hi Genc,

Since you are running on the Umbraco Cloud, then you can also use this package.

    https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/ezsearch/

    Hope this helps,

    /Dennis

    Don't worry, it works :)

Afaik, only HQ can set the "works with cloud" flag.

    Hi Søren,

Since you are using the https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/full-text-search/ on some Umbraco Cloud site, then I have flagged the package as "Works on Umbraco Cloud"

    Best,

    /Dennis

    Hi Genc,

I've received the email to but don't panic too much though. It will be working like it used to for one more year and there are rumours online that Google will come up with an alternative within that year.

So I would just wait for a couple more months before you change anything.

    Jeffrey

Also, it seems like Google has a free json service for custom search engines, where you can filter out the ads.

Of course, if you have thousands of searches every day, you would hit the usage limit quickly. But if you just have a few, that could be a nice substitute.

    Thank you Soren and Jeffrey,

The benefit of using Google is you know what your visitors are getting ON Google Search. I hope they come out with a non-ad supported version once they retire Enterprise Search.

We had a Google Appliance years ago, worked great.

As an alternative I've released https://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/w3s-google-custom-search/ a couple of weeks ago. Under the hood it makes us of the free Google REST API and therefore is free of advertisements. Since the package is kinda new any feedback is of course highly appreciated.
