I have a couple of years experience with WordPress and PHP.
Next to my study, I have my own little web bureau.
I've recently let down 2 potential costumers who asked me to make a website in Umbraco and I can read that there are many advantages to using Umbraco rather than WordPress.
Now I have decided to learn Umbraco!
I have purchased a domain where I will try to make an entirely identical website as my current one hjælptilweb.dk
Usually, my customers will show me a webpage they want their new website to look like. That's why I think it's a good practice for me to tryna copy my current one.
Heres my problem:
The template I've used for my site (themeforest.net/seo-crawler)
is not compatible with Umbraco (I guess its a good practice for me) but now I don't know where to start? I hope to find a person who can help me (I would like to pay an Umbraco expert to give me weekly feedback/help with the project).
Another quick question (hope it's ok) I have made a website a few years ago uniplandanmark.dk
Because it was an exam-project, it had to be hardcoded... Isn't there an easy way to convert it into Umbraco CMS so the owner can edit the page himself?
Hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction!
You may already have discovered this, but the biggest difference between Umbraco and WordPress is that WP was designed to create blogs and Umbraco was designed to create web sites.
There's overlap of course and WP has evolved a bit, but it's important to keep that distinction in mind.
The website is made in Wordpress with Enfold.
No matter what I do, I can optimize the speed, it loads really slow and a "pro" guy from fiverr couldnt even fix it. Now I consider whether I should leave it as it is or make a semilar website in Umbraco.
If I choose to make the site in Umbraco, and it ends up still being slow, I will be devastated.
When you say that the site is being slow I assume that you're talking about the frontend being slow, right? - I mean it could also be a database / hosting issue, but in the following I assume it's the frontend since it turns out the total page weight of the frontpage of your site is around 6MB - I made a quick check in the "network" tab in Chrome developer tools using the image filter shows that you have an image in the image caroussel that alone is 5.1MB, which is an awfully lot for a single image - So my guess is that if you make sure to compress this image the same way as the other images are then you'll see a boost in performance.
That said other things can of course be done as well - Right now when testing on fast 3g from Amsterdam I get load times around 9-10 seconds using webpagespeed test - You can see the report here https://www.webpagetest.org/result/180526KZc8c623f926c065e2d1432bf8a0d6f1d6/ - When you have compressed the image you should see a way better load time.
So in short the fix for your current issue is not to rebuild the current site in Umbraco even though I would love you to use Umbraco of course. But you should be using it for the right reasons :-).
I don't know if it's an image that your client have uploaded themselves or if it's one you have setup for them. But it might be worth it to see if Wordpress has some kind of image optimizer plugin so you don't need to worry about this happening again since the clients will not and really not should very about image optimization.
In Umbraco we have an awesome image cropper, which is based on ImageProcessor done by a cool guy named James Jackson-South, which allows you to serve crops in different sizes, image optimization etc. - That was a side note but it's really useful and something no Umbraco developer could live without when dealing with images uploaded by the clients using our Umbraco solutions.
I do hope that you're still interested in learning Umbraco and developing sites in Umbraco in the future and as you have probably already figured out from the responses about we're a very friendly bunch of people who really enjoy helping each other out.
Help a beginner from WordPress to Umbraco
Hi!

Hi Kevin,
I think the best way is start using https://umbraco.tv/ That's a subscription based video tutorial site.
Or if you don't have the budget for that try to watch Paul Seal's video's on youtube. He has a series of video's on building a site with umbraco : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvWcP8GIYl6l2lJ1Z5-s4ew
Dave
And if you are more a reading guy ; https://github.com/kgiszewski/LearnUmbraco7
Dave
Thanks Dave,
I prefer videos :)
I want to learn it as fast as possible, and I'm ready to pay for it.
Your recommendation goes to umbraco.tv then?
I must admit that I did not watch them myself for a long time. But we use them for onboarding new developers.
Some maybe a little bit outdated, but the same principal applies to newer versions of Umbraco.
And if you find a outdated video. Just report it to umbraco.

Hi Kevin
Welcome to Our and Umbraco :)
The Creating a Site from Scratch on Umbraco.tv is a really good place to start learning the basics - Think that should get you on the right track!
All the best

If you have a few days and some money to toss around, you might also consider formal Umbraco training and certification: https://umbraco.com/training/
They are about $1K and there are about a half dozen courses. You can also combine them into a bundle, which is currently about $4.5K total: https://umbraco.com/training/training-bundle-offers/
Bit pricey for me personally, but if you're very new to it that would be a very quick way to ramp up while learning the best practices.
Thanks a lot for the help!
I don't know if I should create a new ticket or just ask here. But now I am creating a website for Scandinavian Sun who sells properties in Dubai

What to do? Please help!
