Hey all, recently developed a site for a friend of mine using umbraco 7.10.4 and I dont know if this next bit of information will be useful when we get to the problems ive been having but I built this one using models builder.
So, anyways the age-old adage of "Well it works locally" is true here, as it does indeed work locally, pretty damn well infact, it was fast, I had proper intellisense in Visual Studio, and I was very proud of what achieved.
Life was good.
We decided to push live to Pipe 10 (See here: https://www.pipeten.com/net-hosting/ see here for their packages) im no hosting expert, far from it but they are saying all the right words....right?
Full Trust
Dedicated App Pool
Net 4.7
and a myriad of other abbreviations, im fairly sure the 'package' has everything you need, but since it went live ive been having nothing but problems...
The examine index is always corrupting, multiple times a day.
Im have major problems with actions you can perform on the node, creation always seems fine, creates without issue, but unpublishing throws this:

Theres loads of things like this going on, and so not to put exception after exception which no one will read, plus ive a suspicion that all the errors are being caused by either some settings being set incorrectly, or, (more likely) that there's something not quite right on the host despite all the claims.
What about permissions, could that be the cause here? Im not entirely sure i can even set those, its like the lowest windows package, so ive access to the files via ftp and a limited access to things like the dedicated app pool using their control panel. Theres no RDP or access anywhere near that sophisticated.
I know its a long post, and if you made it this far, thanks, I appreciate your time. Im desperate guys, done a really nice job here and I dont want this to be the lasting impression on the project. Anything and everything is on the table here as my knowledge is really starting to break down, and I dread having to keep saying, "I really dont know, but ill see what I can do".
Update: Something I failed to mention earlier, and this could just be something umbraco models just does but every time I go to the models builder tab it says that my models are out of date, I can regenerate no problems but if you leave the section, touch nothing else and come back, ....Models are out of date?
Like....wut? Why? Ive touched nothing.
Am I going mad or are all these "types" of errors relating to the host? Anything specific to ask them? I dont know or even have the right words, let alone put them in a legible order.

always publish without complete AppData folder. Then manually create AppData folder and leave it empty. As long as you have PureLive mode in web.config - all necessary models, idxs, cache etc, will generate automatically.
If you already live and face the situation - then you must stop the app, recycle pool to close requests and delete all App_Data folder.
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to look here, appreciate the help.
Deleted the App_Data folder and recreated and it does seem to be a lot more stable, the things I was experiencing above no longer apply.
However id love to understand just what happened, clearly something inside the App_Data folder had a value somewhere that was fine on local and not so fine on remote causing it to throw a tizzy?
I wonder if something in /App_Data/ had a reference to my local machine, as it was built on it and deployed from it? I suppose it would make sense, if I remember ill pull down the live App_Data and compare to local and see what differences we have as its the same codebase.
Either way it seems a lot more stable now so a huge thanks to you both!
Ahh update, no it looks like even though I can now perform basic tasks on the nodes themselves, create, delete, unpublish etc it still looks like the examine indexes "cannot be read and will need to be rebuilt" and the "Models are out of date".
As I said earlier this is my first site with models builder, so is this just something it does? Always reports the models are out of date or is there a bigger issue here? I would have thought the models only need generating after an edit to a doctype takes place as this is the basis for the models that are ultimately built.
So no edited doctype, no need to re-generate the models, so no need to report they are out of date?
It makes sense (at least to me) that models builder works this way, but if im totally way-off base with it Id love for someone to straighten it out because at the moment all im seeing is an error and something isnt set up or configured correctly.
Just found this error, can replicate by going to Health Check > Data Integrity > XML data integrity (which has a X error signal next to it) and click the section which represents how much content there is.

Again that same error I mention above, "The given key was not present in the dictionary". I feel as though its permissions related now. I think this because all three of these errors relate to a physical file on disc, or at least the physical file has some sort of significance to the operation as one is involved.
For example, models builder generates its models to disc, actual .cs files in the app_data folder, well, at least mine does, set in Dll mode, I believe PureLive is better(??) but when I change to that I get a lovely YSOD.
The examine errors, relate to a physical file on disc, either read from or wrote to.
And the task performed by clicking on the green portion within the content section on XML Data integrity, file related(??) checking on actual XML files on disc(??)
So, if the permissions are off somewhere and it cant do the thing it wants to the thing it wants to do it to, be it reading or writing could this be the cause of these errors?
Just a thought - are you running PureLive or Dll mode for models ?
Personally Dll mode is what I use - the creation of an absolute dll file in your bin directory just "feels" better, and given your comments about models being out of date, might avoid this. Having suggested this, the one gotcha that gotcha's me is deploying changes from dev to live and remembering to rebuild the models - site has a hissy if you forget this !
Then also I wonder about folder permissions on the site - within your web hosting control panel do you have a file manager view ? if so, within that are you able to configure permissions of folders / files ? This I believe is pretty standard control panel functionality. https://our.umbraco.org/Documentation/Getting-Started/Setup/Server-Setup/permissions is the official word re permissions.
Hope this helps - Umbraco is awesome and once you've nailed these teething issues, the site will hum along nicely.
Very bizzare functioning of umbraco when live.
We decided to push live to Pipe 10 (See here: https://www.pipeten.com/net-hosting/ see here for their packages) im no hosting expert, far from it but they are saying all the right words....right?
and a myriad of other abbreviations, im fairly sure the 'package' has everything you need, but since it went live ive been having nothing but problems...
.
But the node does also unpublish.
Deletion is hit or miss, if the node is unpublished and then deleted, then it works normally, however if you delete it whilst published.
Bam:
Inner Exception:
But again, the node does delete.. But wait, whilst typing this I tried another, unpublished node -> delete:
Theres loads of things like this going on, and so not to put exception after exception which no one will read, plus ive a suspicion that all the errors are being caused by either some settings being set incorrectly, or, (more likely) that there's something not quite right on the host despite all the claims.

Not sure of an answer, but it sounds similar to this issue:
http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-6626
I think the issue is examine related. Have you tried deleting the entire TEMP folder in /App_Data/ ?
Hi,

Hi,
I also host a few sites with Pipe10, they have an amazing support team how have helped me out when a few issues arose.
As far as I remember they have an Umbraco deployment post in their forum on exactly how the site should be configured.
Ask them on their chat to point you towards some guides and they should be able to work with you to fix any issues.
My site is running 7.9.6 and I don't have any issues so the chances are it's just a configuration issue.
Thanks, Lewis
