Actually Umbraco has a "Canvas Editing" feature built in to Umbraco 6. But I must admit that I'm not sure how well it works and how it actually works. I never really tried it and the experience was not really that good apparently, which is most likely why it was skipped when Umbraco 7 was released.
I tried to see if I could find some documentation about it from back then but with no luck - And you're right that the packages that do exist are not supported for Umbraco 6.
So if you want to explore canvas editing I'm afraid it's a lot of trial and error. Not sure if perhaps there is some information about it in the Umbraco book from Wrox (The feature was introduced in V4.x back then) - But I'm really not sure it's worth the effort.
It might be better to consider upgrading to V7 (Which can of course be a big project in itself) and then have a look at the 3rd party options available for it?...
Probably not the answer you were hoping for but I hope it helps somewhat :)
Frontend / Inline Content Editor for Umbraco v6.1.6
Hey there!
We're just wondering if there's any way to add in the ability for editors to edit content in our site's front end?
I've seen a few packages for this, but it looks like they're not compatible with Umbraco 6.

Thanks so much, Jan! I appreciate the insight.
Hi Katlynn,
We actually created a package that could help you.
Can read about it here: https://github.com/Vettvangur/Canvas
This is for v7+ only right Garðar? Or does it support v6 too? :)
