I have an umbraco 7.10.4 website and in the backoffice when I expand a parent node in the content section with less than 200 childs is taking 10 seconds to load them.
The content editor added some special characters like & and ' into the names when he create some of the child nodes and I though that would be the problem, but after removing the characters, removing the redirections from url tracker and rebuilding the Examine Indexes is still happening.

Umbraco is really slow in such operations, the suggestion can be to use a listview instead of a child list
