Did anyone experimented some troubles with the Xpath Query in a multinode picker with umbraco 8.1.
For instance $root/someType works fine but adding more nesting doesn't work anymore. Which is not that convenient ?

We faced this issue and instead of $root we used $website and all worked fine.
Please can you try using $website and let us know how it goes for you.

It seems to be $site :-) I did a quick test and it seems to work, but I don't see really the point that it works only partially with $root.
This is fixed in 8.1.5
