You need to use Doc Type Grid Editor. https://our.umbraco.com/packages/backoffice-extensions/doc-type-grid-editor/
This is quite a popular plugin and does exactly what you have mentioned above.

That is close ….. but I need to do the same. I have coded components connected to a database that I want to drop into the grid editor using Umbraco's Backend UI
